Henry Gabriel (1812-1887)

Henry Gabriel was born in Germany in 1812, and traveled within it and neighboring countries in an effort to learn the woolen and cotton industries, before immigrating to America in 1836. In 1839, he started a woolen mill in Millerstown in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He later moved to Allentown to establish another mill, which burned down in 1873, and was subsequently rebuilt.

Bury (Burry), Daniel – coverlets

Daniel Bury

Daniel Bury (Burry) was born between 1800 and 1802 in Pennsylvania and died in Cornersburg, Ohio, in 1883. He wove coverlets in New Portage, Ohio, circa 1839 to 1845, before moving to Cornersburg, circa 1848 to 1851, and Youngstown. His known coverlets date from 1830 to 1851, but the coverlets woven in Youngstown seem to be undated. Charles Wiand

Charles Wiand was born in Pennsylvania circa 1818. He is known to have woven coverlets in Trexlertown, circa 1839-1840, before moving to Allentown and continuing to weave coverlets until 1859.

Boden, C. – coverlets

C. Boden

C. Boden was a native of Woodbourne, Ohio, a small village – now lost to development – in southern Montgomery County.

Beil, David – coverlets

David Beil (circa 1811-1882)

David Beil was born in Pennsylvania circa 1811. His known coverlets range from 1849 to 1853 and contain his name, location and date, also occasionally the client’s name.

Kump, Andrew – coverlets

Andrew Kump (1811-1868)

Andrew Kump was a weaver who worked in Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania. His known coverlets date from 1834 to 1853. In August, 1845, he had an advertisement in the “Hanover Spectator” that he was still weaving damask coverlets for $2.00. He usually wove his clients’ names or initials upside and backwards in the corner blocks. Mr. Kump also did business in Carroll County, Maryland, by advertising in the “Carroll County Democrat”.
