Ferris, Stephen James – American artist

Stephen James Ferris (American, 1835 to 1915)

Ferris was a painter and etcher. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art and with Samuel Waugh (1814 to 1885), before joining the staff of the Philadelphia School of Design where he was an instructor for over 25 years. Ferris was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. He exhibited widely, most notably at the Pennsylvania Academy, the Boston Art Club, and the National Academy of Design. His son and daughter were also artists.
