Palmer Cole Hayden (American, 1890 to 1973)

Hayden grew up in Virginia, but moved to New York in the early 1920s. He studied at the Cooper Union Art School, and quickly became a leading figure in the Harlem Renaissance. Harry Learned was born in Boston, traveled with his family west to Kansas in 1855, and then to Colorado where they were unsuccessful in the gold rush. Clarence Millet (American/Louisiana, 1897 to 1959)

Clarence Millet first studied at the Arts Student League, New York, under the Paris trained painter, George Brandt Bridgeman (1864 to 1943). Gean Smith (American, 1851 to 1928)

Gene Smith, born in New York, worked in both New York City and Chicago until he moved permanently to Galveston, Texas, in 1923. His passion was equestrian figures, especially portraits of champion racing horses. Occasionally Smith would place his equestrian figures in exotic or racing backgrounds.

Havens, James Dexter – American Artist

James Dexter Havens (American, 1900 to 1960)

James Dexter Havens was born January 13, 1900 in Rochester, New York and had a fairly unremarkable childhood until he was fourteen, at which time he was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. Doctors gave him only two years to live, but he clung to life for the next forty-six years, albeit bedridden much of the time. In order to combat boredom, he turned to drawing.

Judson, Alice – American Painter

Alice Judson (American, 1876 to 1948)

Born in Beacon, New York in 1876, Alice Judson was student of John Twachtman at the Art Students League, and had a successful career in New York City in the 1920s and 1930s. She also painted at Gloucester and the Hudson Highlands.

Markos, Lajos – American – Hungarian Artist

Lajos Markos (Hungarian/American, 1917 to 1993)

Born in Budapest, Hungary, Markos earned a scholarship to the National Royal Academy of Budapest. Markos paintings hang in museums in the United States and Europe. He has international recognition for both his portraits and his western art. Markos also painted portraits of the founders of the Zigler Museum, Fred B. & Ruth B. Zigler.
