The use of lacquer with painted decoration was known in China as early as 1000 B.C. and in Japan from at least the sixth century A.D. In the 16th and 17th centuries this Chinoiserie decoration became very popular throughout Europe and many cabinetmakers and decorators tried to imitate its deep and lusterous alure, mostly without success.

Elizabeth O’Neill was born in Charleston, South Carolina, December 21, 1883. Vawter, John William – American Artist – Indiana

John William (Will) Vawter (1871-1941)

Vawter was born in and grew up in Greenfield, Indiana. He began his artistic career in 1893 illustrating books for James Whitcomb Riley, a successful poet, and another Greenfield resident. He married in 1906, and moved to Brown County in 1908. For the next fifteen years, Vawter received regular commissions for magazine illustrations. Vassiloff, Boris – Russian/American Artist

Boris Vassiloff (1906-2000)

Boris Vassiloff was Russian-born artist who immigrated to the United States to Long Island, New York in 1952. He studied at an art academy in Leningrad. He is known for his architectural paintings, still lifes and murals. Some of his art is held at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York and the Museum of Dance in France.

Van Leemputten, Cornelis – Belgian Artist

Cornelis van Leemputten (Belgian, 1841 to 1902)

Leemputten is best known for his images of barnyard animals, especially sheep. A popular 19th century subject, these paintings evoked a sense of nostalgia and were perhaps a response to the ongoing Industrial Revolution. Although largely self-taught, Leemputteen did study at the Academy of Antwerpen. His work was influenced by the paintings of 17th century artist Paulus Potter, as well as his contemporaries such as Charles Jacques.

Luther VaGorder was born in Warren, Ohio and was a well known painter of the Toledo, Ohio area. He worked for a Toledo newspaper before going to New York to study art. He went to Paris to study and stayed through the late 1890′s where he painted his well known Parisian market and street scenes.

Sadayuki Uno was born in Japan, but moved to the United States to be with his father. Ulmann, Doris – American Photographer

Doris Ulmann (1884-1934)

Doris Ulmann was born in 1884 in New York City. She began her photographic career while a student at Columbia University studying psychology and law. As a prominent New York City photographer, Doris Ulmann was best known for her photographs of the Deep South during the 1920s and 1930s. Trained as a pictorialist by Clarence White, Ulmann produced beautifully crafted soft-focus platinum prints.
