Ernest Albert – American Artist

Ernest Albert (American, 1857 to 1946)

Ernest Albert was born Ernest Albert Brown in Brooklyn, New York in 1857, although he later dropped his surname for professional reasons. Albert began his career as a theatrical set designer in 1877 with Harley Merry at the Brooklyn Theater. His designs were quite poplular, and he was commissioned by theaters across the nation, including New York, Boston and Chicago and St. Louis.

Beginning in 1909, he gradually withdrew from the theater world to concentrate on his noncommercial art works. He gained widespread acclaim for these works which included impressionistic winter landscapes and still lifes. Albert also painted a number of well-known summer landscapes with his son, Maxwell W. Albert. He died in 1946 in New Canaan, Connecticut.
