Smillie, James David – American Artist

James David Smillie (1833-1909)

The oldest son of American engraver James Smillie (1807 to 1885), James David Smillie was the brother to noted painter George Henry Smillie (1840 to 1921), and was known in his own right for his landscapes such as Lake Placid and the Adirondack Mountains from Whiteface. The two brothers worked and traveled extensively together in their painting endeavors in the Catskills, Adirondacks and Hudson River regions and traveled out West and to Europe in 1871 and 1884, respectively.
