Meyer Straus (American, 1831 to 1905)

Born in Bavaria in 1831, Straus emigrated to the United States in 1848. He lived in Ohio, then in St Louis, Missouri where he obtained s employment as a scene painter in the Old Pine Street Theater. In the years surrounding the Civil War, Strauss obtained work in Mobile, New Orleans, and other parts of the South. James Otto Lewis was born in Michigan and began painting Native Americans in 1823. Between 1825 and 1828, the United States Indian Department commissioned him to attend treaty ceremonies. While at these ceremonies, Lewis rendered portraits and interviewed chiefs and subsequently published the first collection of native North American portraits, the North American Aboriginal Port-Folio. Chaim Gross (Austrian/American, 1904 to 1991)

Chaim Gross was born in the Carpathian Mountain Region of Austria. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna before his family fled the area during the Russian invasion in World War I. After several years of wandering as refugees, Gross and his brother moved to the U.S. in 1921.

Day, Maurice Day – American Artist & Animator

Maurice Day (American, 1892 to 1983)

Maurice Day was one of the earliest and best known animators in the Walt Disney Studios. He is credited with bringing the Felix Salten book, “Bambi,” to Disney’s attention and spent months sketching and photographing in the Maine woods to provide source material for the 1942 feature length cartoon.

Gilot, Francoise – French Artist

Francoise Gilot (French, born 1921)

Francoise Gilot was Pablo Picasso’s partner and they had two children together before she left him in 1953. Her artwork frequently exhibits a vibrant color palette. Gilot is known for her poetry as well as her artistic career. She studied at the University of Paris, the Academie Julian, as well as obtaining a philosophy degree from the Sorbonne and an English degree from Cambridge University.

Pereilli, Achille – Italian Artist & Sculptor, active New Orleans 1850-91

Achille Perelli (Italian/American, 1822 to 1891)

Born in Italy, Achille Perelli was studying at the Academy of Arts in Milan for sculpture and in 1848 fought with the Italian patriot Garibaldi’s Freedom Fighters and came to New Orleans after their defeat. He was an avid teacher, sculptor, and painter and received significant commissions for sculptures placed in many cemeteries and public spaces.
