Kataro Shirayamadani (1865-1948) – Rookwood Artist In 1887 Rookwood hired Japanese artist Kataro Shirayamadani after several unsuccessful attempts to retain a Japanese decorator. In May of that year Shirayamadani arrived from Boston, where he had been employed by Fujiyama, an import retail and decorating shop. Born in 1865 in Tokyo, Shirayamadani was a skilled porcelain painter whose talent proved most useful to Rookwood. Charles (Carl) Schmidt (1875-1959) Charles Schmidt was born in 1875 in Germany and apparently changed his given name to Carl shortly after joining Rookwood in 1896. He is noted for his fine scenic landscape and marine decorations under vellum glaze. He left Rookwood in 1927 to join R. F. Johnston Paint Co., and later worked for the The Cincinnati Times Star.
