Matthew Harris Jouett (American, Kentucky, 1788 to 1827)

Matthew Harris Jouett, who was born in what is now Mercer County, Kentucky, has long been regarded as the most noted portrait painter in the ante-bellum South. After studying at Transylvania University, he spent four months in 1816 studying with Gilbert Stuart in Boston. Much admired by his mentor, Jouett returned to the South where he painted 300 portraits, very few with a landscape.

Carl Jordan (1863-1946)

A portrait, landscape, genre, and history painter, Carl Jordan was drawn to the visual arts at an early age, and received a thorough academic education at the arts academy in Munich, where he studied with Stahuber, Pefregger, and Loffts. In 1891, Jordan accepted a position as a Professor at the Academy des Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg.

Henry Johnstone was born in Birmingham, England but spent much of his life in Australia and from 1877 to the 1890s lived in San Francisco. He was also a portrait photographer and was a partner in Johnstone, O’Shaughnessy and Company in Melbourne.

David Johnston, the first American satirical artist of note, was born in Philadelphia in 1798. He was apprenticed to Francis Kearney, a local engraver, from 1815 to 1819. Johnston may have lived in London from 1822 to 1824.

David Johnson was born in New York City in 1827. He was known particularly for his accuracy in defining rock formations and foilage and was closely associated with the second generation of Hudson River School painters.
