Kang – Chinese word for fireplace

Kang Definition

A “kang” is the Chinese word for fireplace. In the colder regions of China these were built of clay or brick. They would be would be heated from underneath and used as a bed and general living space. But low tables would be placed on the kang when needed to hold tea, meals, spittoons and other everyday items.

Charles Cutler was the son of Massachusetts painter Carl Gordon Cutler (American, 1873 to 1945), and was primarily a sculptor. He served as the head of the sculpture department at the Cincinnati Art Academy and exhibited widely, most notably at Vose Gallery in Boston.
