Spencerian Compositions
Said to be “flourished”, the elaborate hand-drawn pen and ink compositions are often called “Spencerian Compositions” after Platt Rogers Spencer, Sr. One of twelve childred, Spencer was born in 1800 in East Fishkill, New York. Vorschrift frakturs were often created by schoolmasters as specimens of penmanship and calligraphy for copying by their students as a means of learning to write. They often include alphabets, numerals and a favorite saying, etc. of the teacher.
Abe Blashko, born 1920
Abe Blashko grew up in Seattle and had an early proclivity for drawing. He dropped out of school to pursue art full time and, in 1938, became the youngest artist ever to have a solo exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum. James Everett Stuart (1852-1941)
Working in California, Stuart studied with well-known artists William Keith and Thomas Hill. He painted over 5,000 works, some of which are included in the collections of Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art, Los Angeles Art Association, Reno Arts & Crafts Society, de Young Museum (San Francisco), and the Golden Gate State Park Museum.
Samuel Rothbort (1882-1971)
Samuel Rothbort was born in Wolkovisk, White Russia in 1882. He was born to a family where the father was a scholar and the mother was a breadwinner operating a flour and grain facility. During his youth he worked as a cantor and traveled to various towns and villages, gaining many impressions of life in that era. Tunis Ponsen (1891-1968)
Tunis Ponsen was born in Holland, but is considered an American painter. He especially worked in oils and watercolors, but also did a limited number of lithographs and linoleum block prints. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago with George Oberteuffer and Karl Albert Buehr. Frank Townsend Hutchens (1869-1937)
The Norwalk, Connecticut impressionist Frank Townsend Hutchens studied with Irving R. Wiles and F.V. DuMond at the Art Students League in New York, and at the Julian and Colorossi Academies in Paris. He was a member of the Paris Association of American Artists, Taos Society of Artists, American Watercolor Society, Silvermine Artist Guild, and the Salmagundi Club.

Poster Condition Issues
Posters, for the most part, were printed in large format on the cheapest possible paper, and with an expected life of two to three months on billboards.
