Kang – Chinese word for fireplace

Kang Definition

A “kang” is the Chinese word for fireplace. In the colder regions of China these were built of clay or brick. They would be would be heated from underneath and used as a bed and general living space. But low tables would be placed on the kang when needed to hold tea, meals, spittoons and other everyday items.

The Midwestern Germanic settlement of Oldenburg, Indiana, was initially settled in 1817 by Pennsylvania emigre William George and his brother, Oldenburg soon became the destination of the many German immigrants landing in Cincinnati. Enterprise Manufacturing Co.

The Enterprise Manufacturing Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was primarily a hardware manufacturer known for its coffee mills and domestic devices such as cherry pitters and apple peelers. Taking advantage of the 100-year milestone in America’s history, and the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876, the company produced a number of souvenir banks that depicted patriotic landmarks, such as Independence Hall. The company continued to manufacture banks after the exposition until the late 1800′s.

The Littlestown Hardware and Foundry of Littlestown, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1916 by Luther D. and Emory H. Snyder. Littco Products was the companies art line division of decorative cast iron doorstops, bookends etc. and operated from 1930 to circa 1942. The outset of WWII in late 1941 ended the foundries civilian casting operations.
